Debate on future of Leeds

TWO universities are joining forces to promote a public debate on the future of Leeds.

Academics from the University of Leeds and Leeds Met will lead a public meeting tomorrow under the heading Leeds: Are we going in the right direction?

Organisers said: "Leeds has enjoyed major economic success, becoming the fastest growing city in England and number one financial centre after London.

"Its universities attract thousands of students and retail is booming."

But the academic organisers of the public event recently penned an open letter to Leeds City Council expressing concerns that regeneration was becoming "gentrification"

The meeting takes place at the Rupert Beckett Lecture Theatre, Michael Sadler Building, at the University of Leeds, at 6pm.
