Death of Leeds refuse worker: Man to face court

A refuse worker is to appear in court accused of causing death by careless driving after a fellow worker was killed in a tragic accident.

Ronnie Fieldhouse, 51, will appear in Leeds Magistrates Court on Thursday.

As reported in the Yorkshire Evening Post, 55-year-old David Nelson from Belle Isle, Leeds was filling a refuse truck with black bags in Beeston Park Terrace in south Leeds when the refuse truck reversed into a telegraph pole which fell, striking him on the head and causing fatal injuries.

The two men were contract workers on hire to Leeds City Council, and not part of the council's direct workforce.

The accident happened at about 8am on Monday, April 19.

Following the accident Mr Fieldhouse was arrested and released on police bail. The accident is being investigated by both the Health and Safety Executive and by Leeds City Council.

A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive said: "The investigation is still continuing."

A spokeswoman for Leeds City Council said: "Our enquiries are ongoing so we will not be commenting at this stage."

Trades unions have raised questions over safety issues involving the employment of contract workers.

* Following the accident a council worker was sacked after leaving messages on an internet social networking site about the death.

Messages posted on the Facebook website were understood to have claimed that Mr Nelson deserved to die because he had worked through the Leeds bin strike.
