A hard-working mum has been nominated for boxseats to witness the once-in-a-lifetime Tour de France Grand Depart from Leeds.
Chapel Allerton community support worker Kimberley Saggu has been put forward by her son Luke, 22, for one of 15 pairs of grandstand startline Tour tickets that we are giving away to community champions this summer.
The Yorkshire Evening Post has teamed up with Leeds City Council to offer the opportunity for Leeds’ unsung heroes to see the start of the Tour de France up close on Saturday July 5.
There are just two days left until nominations close for the competition, which aims to reward the city’s inspirational teachers, unsung community champions and volunteers who go the extra mile for others.
Student Luke told the YEP: “I put her forward because of the hard work she puts in with the community - she always puts others before her.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see it, she does follow cycling and I just thought it would be a really nice treat to let her enjoy it.”
He said his mum, who works for Touchstone Support, has spent years supporting vulnerable people with issues involving alcohol and homelessness.
Lucky winners, plus a guest of their choice, will bag the ultimate Le Tour golden ticket - the chance to take their place alongside special guests at the grandstand on The Headrow to see some of the planet’s top cyclists in action at the city’s Grand Depart on July 5. As well as seeing the start of the world’s most watched annual sporting event, winners will get an unrivalled view of a spectacular parade of more than 180 publicity floats ahead of the race.
Luke added: “A lot of people out there help others and don’t get the recognition themselves, it takes someone to nominate them to give them the thanks and praise they should get.”
To nominate someone to win a ticket, explain in no more than 150 words who you think should win and why.
Email nominations, including full name and contact details for your nominee, to email@example.com no later than Monday, June 16.
A special panel will then whittle the nominations down to the final 15, who will be notified in the week commencing June 23.
