Dad Steve Waters has tackled a hair-raising stunt for a charity that is supporting him during his teenage daughter’s battle with cancer.
Mr Walters had half of his hair and beard shaved off and the other half dyed pink to raise cash for the Sick Children’s Trust.
The charity provides onsite accommodation for relatives through Eckersley House at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), where Mr Walters has been staying while his 14-year-old daughter Vicky is being treated for bone cancer.
He said: “I am definitely getting some strange looks, that’s for sure. I had one person come up to me to ask why I looked like this but when I explained it I think they understood why I did it.
“I’m going to keep it like this for a couple of weeks and am thinking about changing it to a Mohican-style after that.
“Vicky’s face was a picture when she saw me.
“She knew I was going to have my head shaved and just shook her head at me.
“She hasn’t said much about it since!”
Vicky was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in May last year after finding a lump on her arm.
She then underwent a major operation in October, which involved a total humeral, shoulder and elbow replacement.
Mr Waters had originally planned to complete the shave on Valentine’s Day in Scarborough before taking Vicky out for dinner.
But the brave youngster faced a setback on her chemotherapy treatment, meaning she had to spend the week at the Leeds hospital.
Vicky is due to finish her treatment after a few more cycles.
Mr Waters, of Scarborough, had been growing his hair and beard since the new year in preparation for the charity head shave, which was carried out by Alexis Cavell of salonSTYLE in Chapel Allerton.
He is hoping to raise around £1,000 for the Sick Children’s Trust from the event.
