The Crossgates Shopping Centre works in partnership with Park Lane College and supports local learners who want to get back to education.
Carol was nominated as she strived to improve her education and learn new skills.
Carol left school at the tender age of 15, with no qualifications, opting to go straight to work. In 2006 she came to the college as she felt she wanted to do something for herself. She took a pre-CLAIT course and enjoyed it so much she decided to return in 2007 to take GCSE Maths.
She wanted to prove to herself that she could pass it and she proved she could! She passed with flying colours, passing both Test in Maths and English at Level 2, Maths GCSE, CLAIT and Reception and Admin skills.
Her new found skills gave her a massive confidence boost and she is delighted with her progress. Carol is now looking for employment and is confident she will find something to use her newly gained skills.
Gareth came to Park Lane in 2005 as he wanted to get some up to date qualifications and restore some of his lost self esteem. He studied and passed CLAIT and CLAIT PLUS and now Gareth is very keen to be back in employment. To further his employment potential Gareth has also decided to work on his ITQ, which he passed. He has now enrolled on a two and a half day Reception and Admin skills course and hopes to get a job very soon.
The Adult Learner Awards enables individuals to be recognised for their singular achievement and Crossgates Shopping Centre is very pleased to support the scheme and fund the awards. Crossgates has awarded 50 to each of the winners and hopes their achievements can be shared with the community.
Steven Seymour, Crossgates Shopping Centre Manager said: "The Centre is very proud to be able to support Park Lane College and more importantly their students in recognising and acknowledging their commitment, dedication and motivation to improve themselves and to develop new skills and knowledge for today's business.
"This shows true qualities of ambition and drive, making them more valued employees and opening up more career opportunities to them. On a personal note I cannot praise the students enough as they are all winners in their own rights, improving themselves and their educational qualifications"
