Cross Gates: Travellers Rest pub 1950s

This is the second of two old photographs of the Travellers Rest public house in Cross Gates.

The large inn stood on the corner of Austhorpe Road (Manston Road) and Station Road.

This photograph was taken in the 1950s although the first inn on the site opened in 1835.

The building was substantially altered and restored with a new entrance and the original features of the inn can be seen compared with the first photograph already published.

The inn occupied the site of both the original inn and a shop and is separated from the two Methodist Chapels opened in 1882 and 1893 by Tranquility Walk. At the rear of the inn was Atkinson's slaughterhouse and his butcher's shop.

One of the early 20th century licensees was William Shroeder who was the inventor of a porous and semi-automatic ventilation peg for beer barrels. The public house was often known locally as the Vent Peg.

The Traveller's Rest public house was finally closed and demolished in 1962 with a new inn already opened on the roundabout in 1959.

The site was completely cleared and the Fine Far supermarket was opened in a new flat-roofed building. When this closed the building became a carpet shop which it remains today with a wide frontage once occupied in part by the inn building.
