Cross Gates shoppers win crossing campaign

Shoppers are celebrating plans for a new pedestrian crossing outside the busy Crossgates Shopping Centre.

The 140,000 crossing will help local shoppers and residents who have campaigned alongside their local Labour councillors in both Seacroft and Cross Gates for the past three years to get a safe place to cross Station Road.

Patrons of St Theresa's community centre and the local church community have also fought for a signal-controlled crossing between the shopping centre and the parish centre.

Campaigners have also called for a nearby bus stop to be moved.

Councillor Suzi Armitage (Cross Gates and Whinmoor) said: "We have been campaigning with our fellow Labour Seacroft councillors and local residents for many years to get a pedestrian crossing put in place on this busy stretch of road. I am delighted that this work will finally be going ahead."

Councillor Graham Hyde (Killingbeck and Seacroft) added: "The shopping centre is extremely popular but getting to it from across the road has been a nightmare for many people. Re-siting the bus stop will also ensure people are much safer when crossing the road."
