Cross Gates RL youngsters aim to display a touch of class

Future Danny Maguires and Jordan Tanseys could be learning the rugby league ropes at Cross Gates school.

Cross Gates Primary School is aiming for the sky after setting up a sporting programme which will give them the chance to produce local heroes like the Rhinos pair.

Pupils aged seven to 11 will learn the skills of rugby league on a weekly basis to teach them the value of teamwork, respect and discipline.

There are now 40 boys and girls who have signed up to play the game after school on a regular basis.

The Rhinos of the future will also have the chance to represent their community with pride by taking part in fixtures across the city. And they will do it all in gleaming new strips, after the Cross Gates branch of Chiltern Mills stepped in to kit them out.

Della Southward, Chiltern Mills store manager, said: "We are very pleased to have this opportunity to show our support for the local community and in particular to encourage boys and girls to get involved in a team sport like rugby league.

"The game is helping them pick up new skills and develop their own confidence.

"We are looking forward to being a part of this local success story as it develops in the future."

Ms Southward officially presented the mixed school team with their new kit at a special celebratory assembly earlier last month.

Cross Gates Primary headteacher Rosaleen Hamer said: "We are very grateful to Chiltern Mills for their sponsorship.

"The children are very enthusiastic and are really excited about trying on their first school rugby kit.

"Some will go on to be great players whilst others will just enjoy the fun it brings, but all of them will gain so much from playing regularly and wearing the kit with pride when they represent Cross Gates around the city."
