'Awards for All' is one of the grant schemes operated by the Lottery Fund and gives grants to community groups to fund new projects.

In this case the award was given in order to allow CDGNS to set up a 'Living History' project.

The aim of this project is to harvest the memories and life experiences of the older members of our community especially around topics featured in the school curriculum, such as the locality, the war years, and childhood.

Cross Gates & District Good Neighbours Scheme coordinator, Jennifer Sellars, said: "By doing this we will be able to ensure that this valuable social history information is preserved and made available to younger generations thus developing the intergenerational work we have begun with a local school.

"We aim initially to target the housebound by visiting them in their own homes to interview them. In this way we will be able to reduce the social exclusion they suffer and enable them to become involved in an activity which many do not currently have the opportunity to do. We will also hold group sessions, possibly during our regular coffee mornings. "

Ms Sellars added: "The project will enable the participants to enjoy social meetings and develop their creative writing skills by being involved in recording and transcribing people's memories. They will also have the opportunity to engage with the local school children during the final stages of the project.

"The ultimate aim of the project is to produce a booklet containing all the information collected which will be available to all participants and will make a valuable resource for the community. "

The grant money will be used to fund equipment costs, transport fees, material and printing charges and contract fees for a project worker to run the scheme, assisted by volunteers from CDGNS.

Councillor William Hyde (Con, Temple Newsam), chairman of the CDGNS management committee, said: "This is a significant milestone in the development of services for the elderly in the Crossgates area. The linkage with a local school will also help the next generation to bring history to life."
