Cross Gates Carnival 2007: Annual celebration arrives

Carnival time is coming to Cross Gates with an annual celebration backed by local churches.

The fourth annual Cross Gates Carnival, organised by the five churches in Crossgates, takes place on Saturday June 30, on Manston Park.

The Deputy Lord mayor of Leeds, Coun Rev Alan Taylor will be declaring this years carnival open.

The event reflects on all aspects of the local community and includes attendance by local councillors, police and fire services.

One of the organisers and carnival MC, Richard Strudwick said: "In a world where you have to pay through the nose for everything, this is an example of the churches coming together for the community of Cross Gates and surrounding areas."

Last year's event attracted 1,500 people, and this years organisers promise a packed timetable of activities for the free carnival.

Puppet shows, a football tournament, clowns, and a gym display, all feature, in addition to the free bbq.

The carnival starts at 11am and finishes at 3pm.

Coun Peter Gruen (Cross Gates and Whinmoor) said: "This is a fantastic event which brings together lots of people from the Cross Gates area. I fully support it and I am pleased to be able to help with some of our ward money."
