Council backs care home plan for derelict Leeds historic building
A historic building in east Leeds is set for a new lease of life as a residential care home.
Planning chiefs have finally given the green light to the scheme by the Springfield Healthcare Group to turn derelict Seacroft Grange into a facility catering for 84 elderly residents.
The Grade 2 listed house was originally built in 1627 and was once the home of the Lord of the manor of Seacroft.
In 1837 it became the property of John Wilson with the family coat of arms displayed in stone over the east door.
From 1941 to 1972 it was a primary school, then became an Adult Education Centre but has been empty for some years.
The project was first mooted two years ago by planners and was welcomed by local residents.
The planning application was submitted by Leeds-based DPP consultants and, if it wins final approval, the care home should create around 100 jobs.
DPP spokesman Will Martin said: "The planning permission is subject to a referral to Government Office because it is a listed building, but after over 10 years of lying vacant, we are delighted to see the scheme gain approval from Leeds City Council. The Grange's restoration will create a significant number of jobs within Seacroft at a time when they are most needed."
When completed, the home will offer long-term and short-term respite facilities for the elderly, with a number of apartments to promote independent living.
Other facilities will include a coffee shop, hydrotherapy spa and treatment rooms for hair, massage and fitness and activity rooms as well as a drop in information centre.
When the building fell into disrepair some years ago, Leeds City Council removed the main 172-year-old staircase and put it into storage. It will now be returned as part of the refurbishment. Derelict stables and a coach-house next to the main building will be demolished.
