Could big-screen digital advertising be the future for Leeds city centre?

A KEY building in Leeds city centre could soon have a large London-style digital advertising screen installed.

The 6.4m by 3.7m screen - featuring moving images but no sound - could be placed on the west-face of the 20-storey Pinnacle building, within the architectural ‘lightbox’ above the Tesco store on Bond Street and Upper Basinghall Street.

A pre-application report coming before planning chiefs tomorrow says the plan “represents a new format of large scale digital advertising of which there are only limited examples in the city centre”.

A previous application for a screen to the eastern side of the Pinnacle site was refused as it would block important city views. An earlier application for a 12m by 6m screen at Bond Court was also refused, a decision upheld at appeal, because it would have been “visually dominant”.

However a plan for a 6.1m by 3.6m screen at the Trinity centre was approved because advertising is an accepted part of the “urban fabric” of the complex. A long-standing big screen in Millennium Square is not used for commercial advertising, just public events and information.
