Coroner calls for fencing after cliff fall
A coroner has called for fences and warning signs to be erected on cliffs after a 20-year-old Leeds man plunged to his death.
Coroner Michael Oakley recording a verdict of accidental death on James Dyson, of Mayfield Gardens, is to raise the issue with the local authorities covering the area near the Blue Dolphin Holiday Park at Gristhorpe, Filey.
He told the inquest at Scarborough that he was surprised that there was an unfenced right of way with warning signs beside the cliffs.
"Anyone either in darkness or in a disorientated state can quite easily fall down the cliffs and I have considerable concerns."
PC Paul Rogers, part of a search and rescue team, told the inquest that motor vehicle technician Mr Dyson's body was found below the spot where his mobile phone was found on the cliff tops.
A friend, Victoria Hutcheson, of Dewsbury, said they had been in a group holidaying at the Blue Dolphin park in July. He had been drinking during the day and had been refused admission to a club on the park because of his condition.
Ms Hutcheson said he walked off but said she had checked he was all right.
Medical evidence showed Mr Dyson was found to have 313 ml per 100ml of alcohol in his urine. The Coroner was told that this would have lead to him being unsteady on his feet and disorientated.
