Consumer: Survey highlights junk food in weekly supermarket shop

We spend more than a quarter of our weekly supermarket shop on junk food, a survey suggested today.

Shoppers spend 17.22 or 26% of the average 65 weekly grocery bill on food such as chocolate, alcohol, biscuits, crisps and soft drinks, according to the study for weight loss company LighterLife.

The survey found Asda shoppers spent the most on unhealthy food at

18.23, while Tesco customers were the healthiest, spending 16.65 on junk items.

More than a third (37%) said they always overspent at the supermarket because they were tempted by treats, while 39% said they expected to overspend on treats even if they did not plan to buy them.

The poll showed 81% of people bought extra snacks outside of the supermarket shop.

The average spend on top-up shops throughout the week came to 11.99 on alcohol and 20 on takeaways.

LighterLife spokeswoman Mandy Cassidy said: "Whilst no one can force

feed us, being bombarded by all this enticement leads many consumers to seek instant gratification and reward themselves with calorific food.

"However, there are changes that can be made, and people do need to be more conscious of their food choices and take responsibility for what they put in their mouths."

* LighterLife used shopping data based on 250,000 shoppers in May. OnePoll surveyed 3,000 adults in May.
