Construction work starts on Leeds's greenest school
CONSTRUCTION is underway on what is set to be the city's greenest primary school.
Existing buildings at Bankside Primary School, Leeds, are set to be demolished and replaced by a 9.1m building with renewable energy sources.
The Harehills school will use a pump which draws heat from the ground, and generate solar-heated hot water, using photovoltaic cells, which capture energy from the sun to be converted into electricity.
The innovative venue is due to be completed in November 2010, providing space for up to 630 pupils as well as a 52-place nursery and community facilities.
Coun Richard Harker, executive board member for education at Leeds City Council, said: "This 21st century learning environment will be the greenest school in the city.
"As well as being kinder on the environment it will help to provide our young people with the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the best start to their adult lives."
The project team – made up of Leeds City Council, Education Leeds, Kier Northern and the Strategic Design Alliance – are aiming for a "very good" rating in the BRE Environmental Assessment Method.
Its construction will be recorded in a documentary made by pupils, featuring interviews with the students who will inherit the school, staff, the project team, and community leaders.
The three-form entry school, being developed by Kier Northern, will continue to be called Bankside.
