Claire follows her boss as party's choice for towns

THE LIBERAL Democrats have chosen Claire Kelley as their prospective parliamentary candidate for Harrogate and Knaresborough.

Mrs Kelley, 51, is a case-work assistant for the constituency's current MP, Phil Willis, who is standing down at the next General Election.

She beat three other Westminster hopefuls at a meeting of Lib Dem members held at Harrogate's St George Hotel.

The divorced mother-of-two told the YEP: "I hope to get the chance to build on the fine work that Phil has done as MP."

Mrs Kelley, who has lived in Harrogate for almost 20 years, has been part of Mr Willis's team since he was elected in 1997.

She was a borough councillor between 1992 and 2002 and a county councillor from 1997 until 2005. She is also chairman of governors at St Aidan's Church of England High School in Harrogate.

Mr Willis announced in May he would retire from Parliament at the next election.

The former secondary school headteacher was his party's education spokesman between 1999 and 2005.
