Church of England appoints new Archdeacon of Leeds

The Church of England has appointed a new Archdeacon of Leeds.
The Rev Canon Paul Hooper is currently director of clergy development for the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds.
Canon Hooper, 59, who is married to Judi and has three sons, has served in the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds throughout his ordained ministry in a variety of posts, including as Vicar of St Mark’s Church in Harrogate for more than 14 years.
He left Harrogate in 2009 when he was appointed to a pioneering role of director of clergy development, a new post created in response to new terms and conditions of service being introduced nationally for all serving clergy.
Canon Hooper succeeds the Venerable Peter Burrows, who is to become the new Bishop of Doncaster.
“I am absolutely delighted that I’ve been asked to take up this post and look forward to sharing in the life of the church in the city at a time of great challenge and many opportunities,” he said.
The Bishop of Ripon and Leeds the Rt Rev John Packer said: “I am delighted that we have been able to appoint Paul Hooper as the next Archdeacon of Leeds. Paul is someone with a deep experience and knowledge of the church, someone who has a proven track record of working with and supporting colleagues, who has been deeply immersed in parish ministry and has had a wide experience of the diocese.”
Canon Hooper has a long association with Leeds having moved from Sussex at the age of eighteen to work for Leeds City Council as a town planning trainee.
He later studied town planning at Manchester University. His ordained ministry began in Leeds as assistant curate at St George’s Church from 1981 to 1984. He served as diocesan youth officer 1984-87, chaplain and communications officer to the Bishop of Ripon 1987-95, then became Vicar of St Mark’s Harrogate.
He is expected to take up his new role in March or April this year.
