A Yorkshire charity has pledged to reach a £2m target to help brain tumour sufferers and their families.

Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire (BTRS) launched the campaign to hit the milestone total by the charity’s 10th anniversary next year.

Already the organisation, originally called Andrea’s Gift, is funding the region’s first brain tumour research laboratory, based at St James’s Hospital in Leeds.

Now a star-studded launch at a Leeds casino has kicked off this year’s mammoth fundraising drive. Among the guests were Kathy Botham, wife of cricket legend Ian and president of BTRS, and sports stars including Leeds Rhinos players.

Carol Robertson, charity development manager for BTRS, said: “Through the campaign Target £2 million – 2013 we want to raise £500,000 over a period of 12 months which will bring the total amount of money raised by BTRS since it formed under the charity name Andrea’s Gift in 2003 to £2m.

“BTRS is Yorkshire’s leading brain tumour charity, providing funds for brain tumour research and patient support across region and unfortunately the number of patients, families and carers we are offering support to is growing rather than receding.”

The charity is aiming to boost research into brain tumours, which only receive a tiny proportion of all donations given for cancer research, even though the illness kills more people under 40 and more children than any other cancer.

This year BTRS is aiming to work with businesses across Yorkshire, as well as recruit volunteers to become charity ambassadors - high profile supporters or those with personal experience - who would promote the organisation at events throughout the region.

Grosvenor Casino Leeds was the first firm this year to offer their support by sponsoring the launch of Target £2 million - 2013.

General manager John Docherty said: “We are proud to be able to support this charity and contribute to their fund-raising. Sadly most of us know someone affected by a brain tumour. Through their work BTRS will be able to reduce these numbers in the future.”
