Chapeltown: Civic recpetion for girls proves 'enriching'

Pupils from a Muslim girls school in Chapeltown were given a civic reception on an educational visit to the heart of decision-making in Leeds.

The pupils from New Horizon Community School in Chapeltown were formally invited to the Leeds Civic Hall by their local councillor Jane Dowson as part of their 'Enrichment Week' activities.

The week-long project was aimed at encouraging young female Muslims to broaden their horizons and seek higher education by interacting with successful professional women.

As part of the project, the school was visited by female teachers, lawyers, doctors and business professionals, along with Coun Dowson, who thought that a follow-up visit to the Civic Hall would be both educational and enjoyable for the students.

Coun Dowson said: "It was a really wonderful experience – as a female councillor – to be able to show these girls around the Civic Hall and for them to see just what women can achieve in society.

"It is important that these young women get the opportunity to see what options are available to them."
