Castleford: Canal maintenance work starts
As reported in the YEP, the Canal and River Trust is staging an open day at the site on Sunday.
The event will give the public an opportunity to venture in to the 460ft long 18th century Bulholme Lock and walk along the bottom.
Experts will be on hand to answer questions about work being done to keep the country’s 250-year-old waterway network flowing smoothly.
Eric Walker, construction supervisor for the Bulholme project, said: “These gates have completed their working life now and have been in place for over 25 years.
“They’re being replaced by new ones that have been made of oak to exactly the same dimensions and design at Stanley Ferry Workshop in Wakefield – one of only two workshops in the country.
“This canal was built to cater for freight traffic so the lock gates themselves weigh between five to six tonnes and measure up to seven metres high.”
