CCTV for troubled west Leeds shops

A west Leeds shopping parade branded an antisocial behaviour “hotspot” is to get a £27,500 CCTV boost from the taxpayer to try and clean up the area, lift trade and encourage shoppers and new businesses to come in.

The small parade on the Farsley Farfield estate has been regularly targeted by troublemakers in recent years.

It has led to locals feeling intimidated, and fears that potential new investors are staying away.

Now a funding boost of £15,000 from Leeds City Council’s outer west Leeds area committee – combined with a promise of a further annual grant for the next five years from the same fund – will help pay for a new CCTV scheme to be run by Leedswatch.

The state-of-the-art equipment will be installed in the Spring. The camera will be monitored 24 hours a day from a central control room.

A report presented to decision-makers for the committee’s Well-Being Fund said: “The Farfield Avenue area with its small parade of shops has been the hotspot anti-social behaviour location in Farsley in recent years.

“The camera will be installed to have good coverage of the parade of shops. The shops are an important local resource. However, they can be difficult to let due to anti social behaviour problems in the area.”

Crimes and incidents recorded in the area in the past few months have included burglary, criminal damage and theft from a car, and smashed windows in a building.

The report said the CCTV would “encourage the vitality of this parade of shops” as well as “reduce incidences of anti social behaviour” and “increase residents’ feelings of safety”.

The outer west Leeds panel – which covers Farsley, Calverley, Pudsey, Farnley and Wortley – has pledged £15,000 to cover 50 per cent of the capital costs, as well as £2,500 a year for the next five years towards running costs.
