Castleford: Safety fears over CCTV-operated level crossing
Lives could be at risk if staff are removed and a busy level crossing is operated via CCTV, claims a Castleford councillor.
Coun Tony Wallis is worried about safety at Cutsyke level crossing on Leeds Road, which is currently manned by four signalling workers.
Under a Network Rail plan it would be monitored using cameras by an employee more than a mile away at a signal box near Castleford railway station.
New lifting barriers will also be put in place at Cutsyke crossing, where 60 trains a day pass through.
Coun Wallis said: "I am not disputing Network Rail hasn't carried out essential safety checks, but I just hope that people's lives aren't put at risk."
A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: "It is vital to stress there is absolutely no way we ever would or could put in equipment that makes the crossing less safe."
