Castleford man’s Magaluf hotel fall death tragedy - inquest

NIGHT OUT: Adam Atkinson.

NIGHT OUT: Adam Atkinson.

  • by Mark Lavery

A young Castleford man plunged to his death at a Majorcan hotel after a night at a bar where customers could drink all they wanted for 10 euros.

Adam Atkinson was on the first night out of his all-inclusive holiday with three friends at the three-star Hotel Martinique in Magaluf when tragedy struck.

An inquest at Wakefield yesterday (Sept 12) heard how after visiting Joker’s bar, Adam and his friends returned to their hotel in the early hours of April 17.

The inquest heard when he got to the third floor, Adam climbed over a bannister on to a narrow ledge of a spiral staircase before falling on to a marble floor three flights below.

Adam’s friend Gareth Yearsley told the court he was climbing the stairs to their rooms on the third floor while Adam had gone up in a lift.

Mr Yearsley said: “I head a bit of a bang and saw something fly past us on the stairwell.

“I didn’t know what it was. I looked over and I saw Adam lying on the floor at the bottom.”

Mr Yearsley added: “He was laid on his back. He just looked like he was lying in bed asleep.”

Paramedics were called and Adam was taken to San Espases Hospital in nearby island capital Palma, where he died from traumatic head injuries in the intensive care unit three hours later.

Mr Yearsley told the inquest: “We had all drunk quite a lot.”

Det Cons Paul Davis said: “Everything that we have gathered points to the fact it was a tragic accident.

“They had been out drinking and came back to the hotel. Adam, for no reason, had climbed on to the ledge, slipped and fallen. There are no suspicious circumstances.”

Deputy coroner Melanie Williamson recorded a verdict of accidental death.

After the hearing, Adam’s devastated father Alan Taylor said: “I texted him just after he got there and said ‘be careful.’ As far as I know he never got that text.”
