generous readers and Leeds United supporters could mean that a Leeds tot can have a potentially life-changing procedure sooner than planned.
Earlier this month the Yorkshire Evening Post revealed that fundraising was underway for Lyle Duckworth, who is blind after being born 15 weeks premature.
His parents Paula McGregor and Lee Duckworth want to take the 19-month-old for stem cell injections in Thailand.
They have been told there is nothing more the NHS can offer in the UK for his sight but the £25,000 treatment could give him the chance to see.
Since Lyle’s story was published, support has flooded in from fellow Leeds United supporters, and well-wishers from as far away as Australia.
His family have now raised over £12,500 and hope an event on Friday will add to the coffers even more.
Paula said: “Thanks to everyone – we are over the moon. We really appreciate it. It has been brilliant.”
Lyle, from Whinmoor, Leeds, weighed just 1lb 13ozs at birth and had to be resuscitated.
He was on a ventilator for six weeks and then diagnosed with bleeding to the brain. On four separate occasions doctors said his condition was so serious that they asked his parents if they wanted turn off the machines keeping him alive.
They refused and Lyle is now an alert toddler, who has defied predictions to feed and breathe on his own.
However he is registered blind and he cannot use his left side. It is hoped that the stem cell injections in Thailand, originally planned for November this year, will repair Lyle’s optic nerve and improve his sight as well as his movement.
Paula, 30, said that the fundraising was going so well that they hoped they might be able to go for the treatment earlier.
On Friday a charity night at Swarcliffe WMC from 7pm will see entertainment from an Elvis tribute act, an auction with lots including signed Leeds United and Leeds Rhinos merchandise, and a raffle.
Fundraisers are also looking for a coach firm to provide transport for a three peaks challenge. Email firstname.lastname@example.org.
