A West Yorkshire town market place has been closed off and businesses evacuated after a driver smashed into the front of a cafe.

An 88-year-old man has been taken to hospital following the accident into the front of Cobbles Cafe in Birstall, which happened at around 11am today (Tuesday).

Roads into the village centre have been closed and nearby shops and businesses evacuated as the crash is believed to have damaged a gas main.

Emergency services at the scene are carrying out checks to ensure the gas supply has been turned off.

Cafe owner, David Krolak, said: “I’m in complete shock. I had my back to the window and heard a huge bang. You could smell gas right away so we got the customers out the back door.”

The incident is causing tailbacks along the A62 (Gelderd Road).
