Captured on CCTV: Leeds Blockbuster robbers smashed worker’s jaw for sake of few coins

This was the terrifying moment hooded robbers launched a violent raid on a Leeds video store.

The two men threatened staff and attacked one employee, breaking his jaw, before grabbing cash from a till and smashing their way out of Blockbuster in Hunslet.

Police are now investigating possible links between the raid and a similar incident at the same Church Street outlet in May.

The latest robbery happened at about 9.30pm last Sunday, September 2, when the two men walked into the shop on the Hunslet Green Retail Park and demanded money.

A police spokesman said: “During the robbery the suspects assaulted a 27-year-old male member of staff resulting in a fractured jaw.

“Two other members of staff sustained blows to the head but did not suffer any long-term injuries.”

After taking coins from the till, the suspects escaped, but one had to smash his way through the front door after staff activated the panic alarm.

They drove off in a dark convertible car – believed to be a VW Eos – which had its registration plates covered by newspaper.

A Blockbuster spokesman said: “We are supporting all the staff and providing counselling. The store has been reviewed in terms of staff security and improvements have been made.”

The incident followed a similar robbery on May 18. Police said a possible link with that incident was one line of enquiry being investigated.

Both of the robbers on Sunday were white. One was aged 20 to 30, about 5ft 10ins tall.

The other was about 6ft 3ins tall and skinny.

Anyone with information should contact City and Holbeck CID via 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously and in confidence, on 0800 555111.
