Cap on Leeds city centre parking as unregulated sites legitimised
Unregulated city centre car parks in Leeds which were forcibly shut down by Leeds City Council council last year are to be made legitimate and a cap put on the total number of spaces.
The council’s executive board will recommend the new regulated status with a condition that improvements are made to their appearance and security.
The overall number of spaces will be limited to 3,200.
The move follows enforcement action on several car parks – and around 1,900 parking spaces – last year.
However it was recognised that an immediate clampdown would penalise commuters unfairly, and new plans were drawn up.
Coun Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive member responsible for city development, said: “The council has a duty to tackle the congestion caused by cars coming into the city centre to park.
“The 3,200 cap on spaces will help control the number of cars coming into the city, encourage more people to use the city’s existing public transport and improve the appearance, security and appearance of the city’s car parks.”

Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 05:04 PMWhen will Leeds City Council realise people will not leave their cars at home until Leeds has decent, reliable and reasonably priced bus services. It is cheaper to park in Leeds than spend money on bus fares, even though the bus fares are expensive in Leeds. Mums (and dads) with children cannot rely on the buses to get them to schools to pick the children up on time. Early afternoon buses regularly 'knock', peak time services are like cattle wagons so who, if they have the choice, would use public transport? Until the bus companies actually want to run the services for the people not just for profit things will never change.
