Calverley: Thieves hit Yorkshire in Bloom contest hopes

Thieves have dealt a blow to Calverley's hopes of success in this summer's Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

Local volunteers had spent months working on the village's floral and plant displays ahead of an inspection by competition judges.

But, just hours before the judges' visit, Calverley in Bloom chairman Frank Robinson discovered one display had been deliberately wrecked.

Several plants were ripped out of a stone trough at the entrance to Calverley Cutting, a bridleway running between Carr Road and Apperley Bridge.

The theft of the hydrangea and hosta plants – worth about 80 – happened last Wednesday evening or early last Thursday.

Mr Robinson, who has reported the incident to police, hopes the bare trough will not count against Calverley when the Yorkshire in Bloom prizes are being decided.

He said: "The people who did the planting are a bit devastated, as you can imagine."

Mr Robinson added that flower pots had also been taken from outside a shop on Woodhall Road and at least one house on the same street.

"The village as a whole still looks lovely, pretty as a picture," he

said.

"It's just a shame somebody decided to do their best to spoil things for us.

"You also start to wonder if it's worth replacing what has been stolen, in case they end up going again."
