By-election candidates named after Dewsbury BNP councillor quits
CANDIDATES have been announced in a by-election caused by the resignation of a councillor representing the British National Party in Dewsbury.
Colin Auty resigned his seat after a national row over the leadership of the far-right group. He intended to challenge BNP leader Nick Griffin for the leadership, but failed to win the requisite number of proposers.
However the clash caused serious division amongs the BNP in Yorkshire.
The by-election for the Dewsbury East seat takes place on October 16. Candidates include:
Amelia Bolton (Conservative), Adrian Cruden (Green), Alan Girvan (Independent), Dennis Hullock (Liberal Democrat), Safiq Patel (Independent) and Cathy Scott (Labour).
Polling stations will open from 7am to 10pm. Applications for postal votes must be made by 5pm on October 1. Forms are available on 01484 222400.
