Bupa Leeds: Week-long bid to raise awareness of reading’s health benefits

Residents with a tale to tell are being invited to spin some yarns as part of National Storytelling Week.

Bupa care homes across Leeds and beyond are calling on members of the local community to join in with events to celebrate.

Care homes will be hosting special reading events and want people to come along and take part.

Held annually, National Storytelling Week, which starts on Jan 26, looks to increase awareness of the value of sharing stories. A similar appeal last year saw hundreds of community members join events across the UK where they enjoyed rediscovering old tales.

Siobhan Drane, Bupa’s Community and Partnerships Executive, said: “We are urging anyone who has a favourite fable, poem or even their very own story to share, to get in touch and help us make this the best Storytelling Week yet.

“Our residents love listening to stories and this is a great way to get members of the local community involved and bring different generations together, as people of all ages can take part. Hopefully these events will help maintain the ancient art of storytelling and encourage people to keep the tradition alive.”

The Reader Organisation, a charity which has been working in care homes since 2006 is also supporting Bupa.

Emma Gibbons, older people’s project manager, commented on this year’s campaign said: “Reading poetry and stories aloud certainly has a positive effect on older people’s state of mind, so this local appeal is a fantastic way of getting others to join in with a simple, yet therapeutic, past time.”

A competition has also been launched to find the best book cover designed by residents. Anyone interested in attending or taking part in a Bupa storytelling event should call 0845 600 4622 or email storytellingweek@bupa.com
