Brothers in arms for our regiment

THEY truly are a band of brothers.

Four Leeds siblings, including a set of identical twins, made history by enlisting into The Yorkshire Regiment on the same day.

The twins, Dale and Richard Hathaway, from Belle Isle, and Bramley brothers Jonathan Bailey and Damien Bradbury, swore their oaths of allegiance at a ceremony at Leeds's army recruiting office.

Captain Andy Adair, who guided the brothers through yesterday's ceremony, said he could only remember one other set of twins in the Yorkshires in nearly 40 years of service. "It is a brilliant day for us," Capt Adair said.

Jonathan, 23, said:"I feel really proud, it is a big day for me and my family."

Damien, 17, said: "It's exciting. I'm going to do at least four years and see what happens. That's the good thing, you learn in the army and it gives you options."

Dale, 17, said the idea for the two to join up together had come from his slightly older brother.

He said the Hathaway family has members in the services, some in the RAF and others in the army.

"We had heard it is a good life, and it is in the family's blood I suppose," Dale added.

Richard admitted the thought of being sent to war zones such as Afghanistan is a concern.

He said: "There is always a worry but you try not to think about that. We will be getting the best training and have always seen the British army as the best. I wanted to be a part of it."

The four will start their 26-week training course at Catterick Garrison by the end of this month.
