Brothel madam escapes prison
A WOMAN who ran a high-class vice den from a luxury Leeds farm employed a sex worker brought into the country by gangsters.
Jun Laio, 32, escaped jail yesterday after a jury had convicted her of running the brothel at the sprawling 14-acre Whinmoor Grange Farm.
The court heard she had duped the owner of the farmstead into renting the property to her.
Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Laio, of Lady Beck Close, Leeds acquired the property after running into difficulties with a similar venture elsewhere.
Judge Jonathan Durham Hall said there was no doubt that Laio was "actively and managerially involved in the sex trade in the north if not further afield."
Handing Laio a nine month suspended sentence with a 12 month supervision order, the judge said: "I am satisfied that you were largely if not solely responsible for not only acquiring the farm but for running it and for employing staff including without doubt one particular lady who had been introduced into this country by those who can only be described as gangsters."
At Laio's trial in November last year, Leeds Crown Court heard that she had rented the farm, including four bedrooms, two bathrooms, reception rooms and a granny flat, for 1,200 per month after it was advertised to let in the Yorkshire Evening Post by owner Paul Andrews.
Regular adverts were taken out advertising "Oriental massage" but two men gave evidence at the trial who were offered and partook in sex for sale at the site.
Police were alerted and cautioned Laio but she continued operating. When police raided the property later, they recovered bags containing condoms, lubricant and a vibrator along with naked pictures of Chinese women taken at the farm.
Laio's trail heard that she had 160,000 lodged in various accounts.
As well as the suspended sentence, Laio, who had no previous convictions, was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work. A proceeds of crime order to establish financial penalties is ongoing.
The judge also revealed at the start of the case that Laio had sent him both Christmas and New Year cards which he yesterday gave back to the defence.
He said: "I take it that it can be understood that regrettably that can have no effect on my attitude to the case."
