Bridge over troubled Yorkshire waters

YORKSHIRE WATER may have to build a bridge after people in Earlsheaton complained about the amount of traffic coming through their village.

The company has agreed to build a new access road to the Mitchell Laithes site in Earlsheaton for ongoing environmental upgrades at the water treatment plant.

Any solution is likely to involve building a bridge over the River Calder.

But the road is unlikely to be ready before 2011 with construction due to start in Spring 2010 subject to planning permission.

The work will take time to begin because the money must be raised through people's water bills without raising them, and due to regulations Yorkshire Water need confirmation for the work to begin from OFWAT.

Lengthy planning procedures will also prevent the work from being carried out earlier.

Meetings

The cost of building the road is likely to be in excess of 1m, with the work at Mitchell Laithes itself costing around 25m.

Richard Sears, Yorkshire Water's community relations manager, said: "We want to be a good neighbour and would like to thank the residents of Earlsheaton for the patience they have shown."

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik held several meetings with Earlsheaton residents, one of which saw a hundred people attending at Highfield Chapel, and he met with Yorkshire Water chiefs on more than ten occasions.

Mr Malik said: "I'm delighted with the result. Yorkshire Water has shown compassion and demonstrated to us all that they are prepared to listen."
