An elderly man has been conned out of more than £13,000 by bogus workmen.
The 85-year-old, from Thornes in Wakefield, is believed to have been made to withdraw about £13,500 for home improvements that have never been carried out.
A 24-year-old man from Shipley was arrested on Wednesday and released on police bail. Detectives believe three people have been involved and are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.
West Yorkshire Police’s crime prevention officer Chris Joyce said: “There is a minority of individuals operating in the county who intentionally dupe occupants into handing over their money.
“There have been instances where offenders have arrived at a property claiming damage which does not exist.
“Similarly, there have been those who have experienced a substandard, unnecessary or significantly overpriced job.
“It is important that people are alive to these possibilities, in particular those who are the most vulnerable within our communities.”
Anyone with information should contact Detective Constable Tom Peniston at Wakefield CID via 101.
