Birstall retail park crime halved
A CRIME-fighting scheme at a Birstall retail park has helped cut incidents by more than half.
An information sharing forum was set up between businesses at the Junction 27 site on the outskirts of Leeds and when it proved a success it led to joint funding for two officers who now work there permanently alongside site security.
Offences dropped from 258 between May 2006 and April 2007 to 110 the following year after the introduction of the scheme and the PCs.
It dropped by 57 per cent and has remained at the same level to date.
Kirklees Crime Prevention officer PC Roger Day, who helped develop the scheme, said: "In particular, thefts from motor vehicles have reduced across the Junction 27 area by 80 per cent since the officers took up the role.
"Other vehicle crime, thefts and shoplifting have all reduced. Figures for robberies have also halved.
"The Cinema at Junction 27 has also noted a significant drop in offences with a 64 per cent decrease since 2006 to 2007."
He said the retailers themselves had played a large part in making the scheme a success.
