Billboards defaced in attack on My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

Billboards for a television show about travellers have been defaced all over Leeds.

The signs advertising Channel 4’s Big Fat Gypsy Weddings have sparked outrage across the UK, with at least three signs in the city – including the one pictured in Chapeltown Road, Leeds – having the words ‘more racist’ painted on them.

The hit TV show follows gypsy brides as they plan their weddings, with Tuesday’s first episode of the new series attracting around 5.7m viewers.

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said there are no plans to change the posters as they are due to come down at the weekend anyway.

She added: “All images were taken with full consent and we are confident all aspects of the poster campaign fully comply with advertising guidelines.”

The Advertising Standards Authority has received 97 complaints claiming that the promos for the show were racist.

* A traveller camp, with around 10 caravans, sprung up earlier this week in Elder Road, in Bramley.

A Leeds City Council spokesman said officers visited the site on Thursday before they follow their normal procedures to deal with unauthorised camps.
