Other special guests are set to include new quartet The Great British Barbershop Boys, Britain's Got Talent finalist Christopher Stone and CBeebies host Katy Ashworth.

There will also be appearances from Leeds United and Leeds Rhinos players, United's manager Simon Grayson, Hannah Montana tribute act Kelly Brazil and local dance group Demeanour.

The event, organised by Leeds City Council and Real Radio with support from the YEP, kicks off at 7pm and is expected to attract around 20,000 people.

Tom Fletcher, McFly's lead singer and guitarist, said: 'This will be the second time we've played the Leeds Christmas Lights Switch On and we can't wait to come back. A great city and always a fantastic crowd.

"We'd like to be the first ones to wish the people of Leeds a happy Christmas."

The event is seen as the start of the Christmas shopping season in Leeds, with the finale of the show seeing the switch flicked to turn on the largest festive illuminations in the UK – covering over 15 miles around the city centre.

Managing director for Real Radio Yorkshire, Steve South, said: "McFly will be a massive hit with everyone and along with Shayne Ward, will make this an unforgettable switch-on party."

Leeds City Council's executive member for leisure, Coun Adam Ogilvie, added: "Whenever McFly have performed in the city in the past crowds have flocked to see them. Together with Shayne Ward and the rest of the line-up it is going to be a great night."

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Jim McKenna, will also attend with the winner of the council's 'Mayor for a Day' competition, who will join the star names to flick the switch at the finale.
