Leeds took centre stage at the launch of a new £40m fund that aims to ensure the country builds on the success of the London Olympics.

Grants of up to £250,000 will be available through Sport England’s community sport activation fund, details of which were announced yesterday at Scott Hall Leisure Centre.

They will be awarded to grassroots projects that are designed to get more people involved in sporting activities.

And the team responsible for the National Lottery-backed fund can’t wait to begin the job of choosing the deserving grant recipients.

Sport England chief executive Jennie Price said: “We want to hear from sports groups across the country that have innovative ideas to get more people involved in sport.

“This fund will help us to build on the momentum of last year’s Games, by showing that sport has something for everyone, wherever you live and whatever interests you.”

Ms Price was joined at yesterday’s launch by a number of local women who’ve got back into sport thanks to a previous scheme run by her organisation.

Community groups, charities and councils can all apply for the new grants.

Bids for the initiative’s opening funding round should be submitted by February 4.

It is hoped the first wave of successful projects will be up-and-running by June.
