Bid to brighten up 'on hold' scheme
TALKS are underway to use hoardings around a stalled city-centre development to promote community activities.
It is now three months since the 650m Trinity Leeds scheme, set to be Leeds's biggest shopping complex, was put on hold because of the recession.
When the announcement was made, Trinity Quarter Developments said it was already looking at temporary uses for the site.
Bob De Barr, development director for Trinity Quarter Developments, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "Though physical activity on the Trinity Leeds site has come to a temporary halt, we have not stopped and will continue to be very busy with work behind the scenes on progressing the scheme.
"In addition to awaiting the outcome of our planning application for the 10 million rejuvenation of Albion Street, we are in consultation with Leeds City Council on other planning-related matters, as we target a delivery date of Christmas 2012."
He added: "We are also in discussions with the council and other stakeholders regarding appropriate uses of a number of key areas of the Trinity Leeds hoardings during the temporary halt of work on site and will be bringing forward innovative and imaginative proposals, which include making sections of the hoardings available for community-focused activities."
He said the aim was to "make use of the hoardings in a visual way that attracts interest and helps to create a vibrant feel for visitors to the city centre".
Creating the Trinity Quarter will involve an overhaul of the former Burton and Trinity arcades and revamping Leeds Shopping Plaza, providing one million sq ft of floor space, a glass roof, cinema and more than 120 shops.
Elevated shops and a walkway will replace the outdated tube-style escalators, stairs and link bridge at the southern end of Lower Albion Street.
Trinity was the most recent in a list of city-centre projects to be put on hold.
Work on the 800 million Eastgate Quarters retail scheme was due to start this year but in February it was shelved until the economy improves.
Developers behind the mothballed Lumiere on Wellington Street have come under fire for leaving a dilapidated-looking construction site, whereas MEPC have been applauded for creating mini allotments and a five-a-side football pitch on their stalled site, Wellington Place.
