Belle Isle: Estate to be a no-go zone for troublemakers
Police are to make a Belle Isle estate a no-go area for trouble makers.
A dispersal order is to be put in place on the Broom estate after a spate of anti-social behaviour incidents.
The Rothwell Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) is introducing a dispersal order after working with local residents.
It allows police officers and police community support officers (PCSOs) to direct individuals and groups out of the area, and instruct them not to return for as long as 24 hours.
The order will run from December 18 until March 11 and will cover the
whole of the estate.
The boundary area runs from the rear of properties on Broom Grove and Broom Crescent, to include Broom Terrace towards Broom Mount, around Broom View and the rear of Broom Nook where it joins Middleton Ring Road.
The boundary then goes along to the end of Nesfield View, bordering Broomfield Special School, around the rear of the school to Broom Place, turning left up to rejoin Broom Crescent.
Nesfield View and Middleton Ring Road do not fall within the boundary.
Officers can order people in groups to leave the area and people who do not live within the boundary to leave the area and not return for up to 24 hours.
The order also prevents anyone under the age of 16 from being within the boundary covered between 9pm and 6am unless with a parent or responsible person over the age of 18.
Anyone who remains in the area or returns after being told to leave could receive a fine of up to 5,000 or up to three months' imprisonment.
Insp Sue Jenkinson of the Rothwell Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said: "Local people have told us they want anti-social behaviour tackling on their estates as a priority, and in recent weeks NPT officers have carried out a number of schemes which have been
successful in cutting the problem.
"The dispersal order should have a greater, long-term impact. By the time the order finishes in March hopefully local residents will feel that the NPT have successfully tackled anti-social behaviour and it is no longer a priority or an issue in their area."
The Rothwell NPT has run several innovative schemes and operations to tackle anti-social behaviour, including the use of an anti-social behaviour closure order on a house on Broom Place – the first of its kind outside London.
Insp Jenkinson added: "Local people tell us they want our officers to tackle anti-social behaviour as a policing priority, and a lot of our efforts have gone towards this.
"We will continue working towards this as long as local people tell us that anti-social behaviour is still an issue affecting them."
