Belated honour for town heroes

PUBLIC recognition has come at last for 10 Morley men who died in the service of their country and freedom. come at last for

Somehow when peace broke out, the names of the 10 who died in the 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars were never added to their hometown's memorial, erected in Scatcherd Park in 1927.

But on Sunday, on the weekend of Veterans' Day, the newly restored memorial with its statue of Britannia and the belatedly added names, was rededicated at a special service attended by civic dignitaries, military VIPs and the public.

After a military-style parade from Morley Town Hall the new plaque bearing the 10 missing names was unveiled by Iraq War veteran, Cpl Simon Brown, from Morley.

During the rededication service, wreaths were laid by Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Col Alan Roberts; Lt Col PA Simpson, commanding officer of 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment; and by the Mayor of Morley, Coun Terry Grayshon.

Coun Grayshon had led the campaign to get the memorial restored, and received one of the first approaches about the names missing from the memorial.

Further missing names then became known and the memorial was renovated with funding from Leeds City Council's outer south area committee.

Coun Grayshon said: "It is vitally important that as a society we remember those who laid down their lives in order that we may live in peace."
