Beeston Festival: Event set to show best of community spirit

This year's Beeston Festival on Saturday is focusing on healthy living and encouraging people in the area to get involved in sporting activities.

Young people will have the chance to try out different sports with professional coaches form Beeston Broncos, Hamara Centre and Leeds Sports Development Unit.

There will also be basketball and football coaching, the Indian game kabaddi, cheerleading led by Beeston Blazers, football competitions and the Rugby League Skills Zone.

The event starts at 11.30am with a parade through Cross Flatts Park and will be officially opened by local MP Hilary Benn and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Gerald Wilkinson.

For the first time there will be four stages of entertainment featuring all types of music and other attractions including children's activities, the Leeds FM Roadshow, around 100 stalls and a flower and produce competition run by the Friends of Cross Flatts Park.

The Children of Achievement Awards to the four youngsters nominated by each local primary school will be presented at 1pm.

Coun Angela Gabriel (Lab, Beeston and Holbeck), chairman of the festival committee, said: "This year's festival will be bigger and better than ever and I hope as many people as possible from the local area, and indeed all over the city,will come along.

"There will be lots of fun activities with something for everyone to enjoy and the festival will also be a great opportunity for people to find out what a fabulous place Beeston is and how much the area and its people have to offer."
