Balls of steel for Leeds

UNLIKE crystal balls they won't reveal the future but two giant stainless steel spheres in the heart of Leeds are set to reflect the present in an ever-changing city.

The balls, which weigh a total of two tons, form part of a striking 100,000 sculpture created by Kevin Atherton.

A Reflective Approach was unveiled yesterday after the balls were lifted into position by a crane.

Kevin said: "The spheres have been made from highly reflective stainless steel so that a mirror effect is created and this signifies the continuity the sculpture will hold next to the water's edge.

"I also wanted the installation to symbolise contemporary life in Leeds and the UK today, and I think this is expressed through the detailed depiction of the two figures."

Kevin, who studied fine art at the former Leeds Polytechnic, now Leeds Met, from 1969 to 1972, said: "I see this sculpture as being a homecoming."

Developer Crosby Lend Lease funded and commissioned the sculpture.
