Labour’s rising star and the second female MP to hold a seat in Leeds is pregnant, the YEP can reveal.
Shadow chief secretary and Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves, who is married to Nick Joicey, yesterday revealed that she is 14 weeks pregnant.
The 33-year-old has pledged to continue to support her constituents as she balances her new family with her political career.
Rachel said: “It’s our first child and it’s exciting.
“We spoke last year about wanting to start a family so it didn’t come as a total surprise.
“There are millions of things to think about and get my head around.”
The couple, who were married last year, had their first scan at Leeds General Infirmary last week and the baby, whose sex is not yet known, is due on March 17.
She has already received support from Labour Party Leader Ed Milliband and shadow chancellor Ed Balls.
Rachel said: “They were both delighted and really pleased.
“They have given me all the support I need to be a successful mum as well as being a successful politician and MP.”
MP Louise Mensch recently revealed she would be stepping down from politics to focus on her family life.
But Rachel hopes to balance her career in Westminster with being a mum.
She said: “Thousands of mums and dads are going to have to balance having a family with having careers.
“I will take a period of maternity leave and continue to be here for my constituents.
“I think it’s possible for mums and dads to balance being MPs and being parents.”
She said that she will also be looking to fellow politicians for advice about parenthood and added: “There are lots of people to give good advice about getting the balance right.
“There will be 101 things I have not even thought of.”
