Award joy for Leeds OAP champ
CHAMPION carer Tracy Hiscoe went the extra mile when one of her elderly charges was too ill to attend his son's wedding.
She organised a special wedding party at the Simon Marks Care Home in Wortley, Leeds, so that the pensioner could feel part of celebrations on the big day.
Now Tracy's determination to do her level best for pensioners in her care has earned her a national award.
She has been crowned Dignity Champion of the Year in the Grand Final of the Anchor Smile Awards.
The Anchor Smile Awards are run by Anchor, England's largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for older people.
Tracy said: "Dignity in care is so important to me – it's at the root of everything I do, so this award is incredibly meaningful. I can't wait to take it back to Simon Marks Court and show my friends and colleagues."
Martin Green, The English Community Care Association's chief executive, who judged Tracy's nomination, said: "The wedding party was an inspired idea and would have meant the resident felt part of his son's big day.
"Add to that all the wonderful testimonials from colleagues and older people that made up Tracy's nomination and her win was an easy choice. She's a star."
Manager Christine Pitts said: "Tracy's view is that everyone should always be treated with respect and dignity, and looked upon as an individual. She really embodied what person-centred care should be recently, when she organised the wedding party at the home for a resident who was unable to attend his son's big day.
"It gave everyone involved a real day to remember, and the resident a wonderful photograph album of memories. Tracy is a true champion."
Tracy, who was presented with 1,000 cheque and a specially designed glass trophy, enjoyed a day of celebration with a three-course lunch and champagne reception at London's Plaisterer's Hall.
