Austhorpe Primary gets outdoor classroom
Children from Austhorpe Primary school will now be able to retreat from the heat of summer sun in the shade of their new outdoor classroom.
The outdoor classroom is to be used as a shady area for reading during lessons.
It has been paid for thanks to a 5,000 donation from Northern Gas Networks.
Matthew Browne, the deputy head teacher said: "The outdoor classroom is a huge boost for us and is already being well-used."
The donation was the outcome of an ongoing relationship between the school and Northern Gas Networks.
Employees from the Thorpe Park offices have been involved in a voluntary reading scheme, where they spend an hour a week reading with pupils.
The outdoor classroom was officially opened on Friday, July 3, as part of the school's open day.
Ian Taylor, one of the volunteers on the reading scheme represented Northern Gas Networks and cut the ribbon to the classroom, to celebrate its official opening.
He told Cross Gates Today: "I've been visiting the school for over a year with the reading scheme so I'm really proud to declare the outdoor classroom officially open."
The outdoor classroom wasn't the only new equipment being showcased.
Their new 'Trim Trail' and climbing wall funded by the PTA was also launched, which is the first phase of an enhancement of the outdoor area.
Phase 2 will begin soon which involves new playground markings which should make playtimes more fun and interactive.
Northern Gas Networks employees will be back next term to continue their support of the school through the reading scheme.
