Artist shapes a tribute to pit past

A SCULPTURE to commemorate Lofthouse's mining heritage is to take pride of place in the village.

The work in stone is being created by local artist Melanie Wilks thanks to a 5,000 grant from local councillors.

The piece was commissioned in January when Couns Lisa Mulherin and Jack Dunn (Lab, Ardsley and Robin Hood) awarded Lofthouse tenants and residents association the cash from the Red Pit Mining Fund.

It is hoped the sculpture will stand on the junction of Longthorpe Road and the A61 in Lofthouse by May.

Coun Mulherin said: “We were absolutely delighted to award the cash for such an exciting project. The sculpture will be a permanent and visible reminder of the area’s coal mining heritage. What makes it even better is that we have been able to find a local artist to create the piece.”

Coun Dunn added: “I recently visited the artist to see the start of the work and it promises to be something really special. I can’t wait to see the finished sculpture.”
