Artist Jason's rugby exhibition

OF ALL the things you think of when you hear the word rugby, art may be the last thing on most people's minds.

But artist Jason Minsky is defying stereotypes with his exhibition Match Report at the re-launch of Project Space Leeds.

His show uses photography, video, performance and even karaoke to express Headingley Carnegie's environment and community spirit.

An example of his work includes Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield looking confused with a cricket ball in his hand.

Jason said: "I feel privileged to have had this year. I can't say that enough, it's gone so quick.

"I had some preconceptions about rugby league but it's an incredible profession.

"I wanted to try and see things as freshly as possible. That's why it helped not being a rugby fan I think."

The 39-year-old artist, who is originally from Hendon, north London, has been on the inaugural one-year residency with the Leeds Rugby Foundation, who set up the residency to express the character of Leeds rugby.

A collection of memorabilia will be shown by the Foundation in a special 'clubhouse' area of the exhibition.

Project Space Leeds have been busy refurbishing after its Strangely Familiar show finished on May 10.

Amelia Crouch, gallery manager, said: "The refurbishment hasn't been stressful in itself, it's just been the time constraints because we needed to get this done so quickly.

"The floor was uneven and we've had a new kitchen area put in. It's also more accessible for disabled people. We're hoping for a lot of rugby players to come down".

Match Report, which is supported by Leeds Metropolitan University and Arts Council England, opened yesterday and runs until August 23.

Project Space Leeds is open from noon to 5pm on Wednesdays to Saturdays.

Admission for the exhibition is free but booking is advised.
