Could there be a future Hirst in Horsforth, a potential Picasso in Pudsey or a mini Monet in Moortown waiting to be discovered?

Young mum and successful artist Catherine Campbell certainly hopes so and she has her artistic eye on possibilities.

After launching a new art studio and gallery specifically for nurturing Leeds children’s creativity, she is one of the best placed people to find those future stars.

Catherine, 33, a full-time artist with an international following of her own, started her Artbugs classes from her living room in Bramley a year ago.

But after seeing the project flourish – and running out of space in her family home – she has now opened a studio in Horsforth to continue her work.

As well as running a variety of classes and activities for tots as young as two, it will house a proper gallery of the youngsters’ work.

Catherine told the YEP: “I originally started running art classes for pre-schoolers in my home in Bramley but it expanded and I ran out of space in my house.

“I started running after-school art clubs all around Leeds and found a huge demand for art activities for children of all ages for weekends and Saturday classes.

“I got to the stage a few weeks ago where I couldn’t fit everyone in my dining room and had to start turning people away, so have opened an art studio that works specifically for children and young people.”

The studio will offer after-school art clubs, Saturday classes, private tuition, preschool art classes with childcare, Baby Art discovery sessions and “art parties”.

A public gallery of the youngsters’ work will also be created in the coming weeks at the studio in the Feast Field business estate in Horsforth town centre.

From March, Catherine will also be able to offer specially tailored Arts Award qualification for children aged seven and upwards.

She hopes the next big star of the art world could be Leeds-born and among her crop.

“There are a lot of talented children out there and they love art. You give them a basic spark of an idea and materials and they just go off and come up with some wonderful things.”

Catherine launched the Artbugs initiative after spotting a gap in the market for supervised arts classes offering parents a break.
