NEW FLEET: 40 of Arriva Yorkshires new fleet of buses wind their way through the grounds of Temple Newsam.

From princes to pop stars, Temple Newsam House in Leeds has played host to plenty of VIPs down the years.

Yesterday, (February 8) though, the historic house’s stunning grounds were graced by a 40-strong collection of VIVs – or Very Important Vehicles.

The vehicles in question make up the bulk of a fleet of new buses that have been acquired at a cost of £8m by transport firm Arriva Yorkshire.

They were on show at Temple Newsam to highlight what the company says will be their “huge impact” on services in the White Rose county.

The fleet’s 41 double-deckers and two single-deckers boast low emission engines, brand-new ticket machines and CCTV equipment.

And after yesterday’s photoshoot, the buses were pressed straight into service on some of Arriva’s key routes, including the 110 (Hall Green-Wakefield-Leeds) 126/127 (Wakefield-Ossett-Dewsbury) and 229 (Huddersfield-Heckmondwike-Leeds).

Nigel Featham, managing director for Arriva Yorkshire, said: “We’re really proud to be able to offer our valued customers a newer, improved level of service through our investment in the fleet.

“The new vehicles can accommodate buggies, helping busy families get around easier and we are putting a lot of effort into ensuring everyone’s journey experience is enhanced.”

Schoolchildren from Sherburn Hungate Community Primary and Dewsbury’s St Josephs Catholic Primary took part in yesterday's showcase by lifting up 8ft-high letters spelling out ‘We Are Yorkshire’.

* Temple Newsam is a Tudor-Jacobean house that has been frequented by the well-to-do likes of George, Prince of Wales, who visited in 1806 and later became George IV.

More recently it has regularly welcomed top pop acts such as JLS, Dizzee Rascal and McFly during its estate’s annual Party in the Park music bash.

This seems a bit ironic in that the bus companies stopped regular services to Temple Newsam some years ago.How about re-introducing the no22,so more people could enjoy this lovely park?
